Week 2 of San Frans!

Hello~! I am back with my second post! This is my second week in San Francisco and for some reason, I felt this week pass pretty fast. Well! Maybe I am having too much fun! thats why the time passes so fast. hahaha... Anyway! I start with sharing what I have done this week follow up with the fun places I went! Basically, I continue to edit the short film for harvestfest that we shot last week, and we shot an interview with one of the cornerstone pastor to edit in with the short film. We were also taught about LIVE production and again, I got the chance to be one of the camera operator! We help to do LIVE production for their church services and it was mine first time doing it! It was really fun and I really enjoy operating the camera during the whole production. It was stress at the start because everything is LIVE and theres no CUT! or a take 2, so throughout the whole shoot, I got to be alert and attentive to what camera angle or shot the director want. But yeah..after awhile, I start to get the hang of it and I really had a great time during the whole production!

Now work aside! this week, We went to visit a few interesting places! Firstly, Harry brought us to adobe! Yes!!! Adobe!!! We went there to have a so-call editor gathering/meeting where editors from different area in san Francisco come to meet and attend talks by different professionals sharing their experience in filmaking and to introduce the latest editing software like final cut 10 and premiere pro 6. Pretty cool uh! and at the end of the meeting, there was a luck draw and ellis got a prize to attend a workshop?...hahaha.. the whole meeting was a great exposure for me and it will be cool if we had this kind of meeting in singapore!

Next up! We were brought by Harry to watch the grand national rodeo!!!! IT WAS AWESOME!!! how often do you get to see hundreds of audience dress up like cowboys, people riding and wrestling with a bull and cowboys doing stunts with horses? Ya...it was that intense...overall it was really a great experience watching the rodeo! Thanks Harry!!!

Lastly, we went to the wax museum at fisherman wharf! it was kind of a disappointment for the wax museum because I would expect to see more, and also get close up with the wax figure to take picture, but they were barricade and the whole place was quite dark, so could not really take picture with it. But still, it was a experience to visit the wax museum!

Cornerstone Academy is located on top of a hill ergo its extremely windy and chilly and it can really get quite cold sometimes! i dont take that many pictures soooo................ yeaahhhhh, i'll try to take more pictures so i'll be more interesting for whoever you are reading mah blog post yo.

My role for Harvestfest was assistant director. I basically helped Harry, the director, around with keeping up with the shots and gave suggestions occasionally. As I was the director for my own film for FYP, I saw how directors in real industries and companies work and it was definitely an eye opener as they worked very differently from how my crew and I worked. Production here is really enjoyable, compared to productions I have done back in Singapore for school or for external clients, I realllyyyyyyy think it has to do with the awesome chilly weather. No kidding. The crew doesn’t get agitated or tired (or smelly or sweaty) so the whole filming period is very funnnn and enjoyable! I really wanna work more with cameras for the next production as I absolutely love the EX1 and EX3 and i just wanna be a better DOP or cam op!

oh hey! a familiar face!

we moved the boom all da way to the other side of the school.

I also learnt how to work with kids. O_O ok not really work with them, I guess you could say working around with them. Wow. It is difficult. They get tired after a few takes and their attention span is s h o r t. but who can blame them right, they are just KIDS. Guess that’s something I gotta learn. Working with kids.

We learnt how to coil cables and wires the correct way and I personally feel that it is a useful skill that will definitely be useful in the long run. It may sound simple but Harry had to teach and demonstrate it to use over and over and over again!

We’re done with filming around so now its time for post! Larry is the editor and im the vfx artist. We shot against the green screen and Harry requested some mograph so I guess its time After Effects and I get acquainted once again. Well hello there after effects, it has been a long time and I’ve missed you, lets work well together so please don’t crash on me. ( I have no idea why I love talking to computer softwares. I hate you Maya2012.)

Well then, other than work, we went up to Twin peaks, ate awesome burritos, took the train, bus and cable car downtown Union Square and shoppppeeeeddddddddd!

My Internship experience!

Hi! This is Larry here! This is my first time writing a blog, so pardon me if is boring hahaha... so to start off, I want to say I really enjoy my trip so far. This is my first time leaving Singapore for 3 months and to have internship in an overseas company. One of the reason I enjoy my internship so far is because of the good hospitality from cornerstone academy! People like Harry,Phil and Li soon treated and care for us very well making sure our stay in San Francisco an enjoyable one. They brought us to places of interest like twin peak,fisherman wharf,union square and places with good food! hahaha!

Although so far, This is only my 6th day in San Frans, I was taught and learn many things like lighting, handling of different equipments, learning how to coil wire(It was really a useful and good skill to learn!) and also to help out in their production by being a cameraman assistant,cameraman and editor! Yes! I say again! I was actually given a chance to be a camera operator in an internship. Usually, we students don't get such a big role like being a camera operator or editor when we first work or intern in a company as they may afraid we may not do a good job or be up to their expectations as we are still students. But right here, we are given the opportunity to work on the camera as well as editing their film. 

So ya..it was pretty fun and exciting the past few days. till then! I will end this post for now, but before I end, the last thing I want to share is that I got to learn how to play table tennis here! Is a pretty fun sport to learn and I hope after my 3 months here, I will be able to play very well! hahaha! 

California here we come. Week 1

Hello. Okay so today was our fifth day here and I am beginning to pen this down because I am obviously going to forget if i don't. Hahahaha. I'll start from the time we left Singapore till today. I mostly have photos to express myself, as well as a few videos that I took along the way with my iphone. Will get about to editing it soon. So we left Singapore on the 15th October and our friends & loved ones etc came to send us off which was pretty cool AS WE'RE GONE FOR THREE MONTHS. Stopover at Narita before flying to SanFrans. We nearly died in the plane because the ride was extremely torturing and long. Well personally I suffered a terrible experience as I have motion sickness. But finally after 17 hours we arrived safely, & started this adventure :>
                                                                       Day1:

 

 So Basically the past few days we spent getting used to the place and adapting to the time difference. The last image above was us awake at 5am making ourselves food because we were so hungry and were awake so early. Also, playing basketball and table tennis at night in the cold to burn off the fats from the whole day hahahahahhaahahha.

For me, the thing i love the most about waking up every morning in San Frans would be the breathtaking scenery I wake up to. Instead of boring Singapore buildings, I wake up to such a glorious view that calms my emotions as I awe at it's beauty.

Day 2-4:

So from the second day onwards we actually helped to film a video called Harvestfest for the school. It was pretty fun as it was very different from our normal filming we do in Singapore and to me it felt less stressful and I enjoyed it alot. As compared to Singapore, the weather here played a very important role as to enjoying the whole filming process as it was cool and breezy whereas compared to Singapore it gets so hot and annoying. Also, there were jobs that were delegated for this first assignment and I was in charge of the slate. It was a good experience even though it seems so minor and non important, it kept me on my feet and I realised and learned how important it was to actually record a logsheet so as to make the editing process much easier as compared to not having any logsheet to compare the footages and their takes. Over the past few days I have also learned alot as well as the simplest things like tying a cable that makes life easier for us when we use them.

 

We did the set design for this set which was pretty cool because we learned the lighting and all to create different night and day scenes. 

Here are some photos of what we did I have so many photos it is impossible to load them. Also, Nathan is the cutest hahahahhahahaahahaha. 

Anyway this morning I got the chance to be a camera man for a bit. Lol. I never actually used the ex3 or any other camera foreal before so it was pretty amazing & legendary haaahahahahahaahha. I would like to learn more about it during this three months too. 

 Obviously got too excited Lol. But yes. 

Okay I will post on our trips out and about in another post since this is getting too long and messy.
